How Long Are Private Jet Flights?
The vast majority of business jet flights in North America are under 1,000 nm (nautical miles). Only about 2% of flights are over 2,000 nm. The chart and table below, courtesy of WINGX, show how the length of flights has varied over the last six years. Further data show flights by duration.
Short Flights Under 500 nm Predominate
The largest proportion, 58% in 2024, of business jet flights were under 500 nm. Another 28% were between 500 and 1,000 nm, so combined, 86% of North American flights were under 1,000 nm. This is useful to bear in mind if you are thinking of buying your own plane or buying a fractional ownership share – really think through the size of plane that you need. Mid-size jets, even when fully loaded, and light jets can comfortably cover these distances. Of course, your own personal mission requirements may vary from these typical patterns, and so a larger plane may be more appropriate for your needs.
The graph below shows the number of departures, in North America, by month. The top dark blue line is the number of departures under 500nm. In 2024 there were a total of 1,525,751 business jet flights under 500 nm in North America - equivalent to an average of 127,000 flights per month The light blue line is the number of monthly departures between 500 and 1,000 nm.
The next line down, the maroon line on the graph, is for flights between 1,000 and 1,500 nm. These have seen the largest growth since 2019, up by 39% compared to the 2019 baseline, but they still only represented 8.5% of all business jet flights in 2024.
The longer-distance flights from 1,500 to 2,000 nm and those over 2,000 nm are the two bottom lines on the graph, and in 2024 represented just 2.8% and 2.4% of total flights, respectively. As an example of the distance, a coast-to-coast flight such as Van Nuys Airport (VNY) in California to Teterboro Airport (TEB) in New Jersey, is over 2,000 nm.

The annual totals for these flights, by distance bracket, are shown in the table below, and the section on the right shows the flights indexed to a 2019 base. The red highlighted box on the right shows the proportional growth of 2024 departure numbers compared to 2019 departure numbers. Overall, there were 2,629,517 departures in 2024, which was just slightly down about 0.5% from the 2,641,460 flights in 2023.

Domestic vs International Flights
WINGX also splits the data to look at these departure numbers by domestic flights and international flights. In 2024 the vast majority, over 90%, of these North American departures were for domestic flights and only about 9%, 242,933 departures were for international flights. But the international flights have seen the largest growth since 2019, when they were just 7.3% of all departures.

Flights By Flight Times
Looking at more recent data from WINGX for the 12 months to the end of June 2026, but this time looking at all worldwide business jet flights by duration, shows a very similar picture.
Short-haul flights of under 1 hour represented 40% of all departures in the twelve months to June 2026, with 1,601,800 flights out of a total of 3,972,200.
Private flights in the 1 to 3 hour range are the most common group, representing 49% of all business jet flights (1,933,700 out of a total of 3,972,200). Flights over 3 hours were just 11% of all flights. The table below shows the number of worldwide business jet departures.

These short flights also show up in the leading city pair connections. Again, looking at the WINGX data for the 12 months ending June 2026, the most popular city pair connections in the USA were:
Las Vegas, NV - Los Angeles, CA (with 13,328 departures) and the reverse trip of Los Angeles, CA - Las Vegas, NV (with 13,265 departures)
In Europe, the most popular city pair connections were:
Paris, FR - London, GB (with 2,671 departures) and the reverse London, GB - Paris, FR (with 2,627 departures)
