Midsize Cessna Citation Ascend Enters Service

Textron Aviation has officially ushered in the next evolution of its highly successful 560XL series with the entry into service of the Cessna Citation Ascend. The first customer accepted delivery on December 30, 2025. This caps a rapid and focused development program that began with the aircraft’s announcement at EBACE in 2023 and culminated in FAA type certification in November 2025.

Series History

This 560XL series was first announced in 1994. The original Citation Excel was first produced in the 1998, before being upgraded to the XLS in 2004 and the XLS+ in 2008. The further enhanced XLS Gen2 was introduced in 2022.

Citation Ascend

A Modern Successor to a Proven Lineage

The Citation Ascend builds on the legacy of the 560XL family - one of the most popular midsize business jet platforms, with more than 1,000 deliveries since 2000. While not a clean-sheet design, the Ascend introduces a suite of upgrades that position it as a compelling option for operators seeking efficiency, comfort, and advanced avionics.

Key enhancements include:

  • A redesigned flat-floor cabin, enabling greater personalization and a more spacious feel
  • Garmin G5000 avionics suite, bringing modern flight deck capabilities, improved situational awareness, and streamlined pilot workload
  • Pratt & Whitney PW545D engines, offering improved performance and efficiency
  • Larger cabin windows for enhanced natural light and passenger comfort
  • Onboard Wi‑Fi and upgraded connectivity, supporting productivity and entertainment in flight

The aircraft has a maximum speed of 441 knots (817 km/h) and a four-passenger range of 1,940 nautical miles (3,593 kilometers). While the cabin can accommodate up to 12 passengers, it is more likely to be configured with about 7-8 seats.

These updates reflect Textron Aviation’s strategy to modernize a proven platform rather than reinvent it. An approach that reduces development risk while delivering meaningful improvements for operators.

Certification and Delivery

The Ascend received its FAA type certification in November 2025, clearing the way for customer deliveries just weeks later. Textron Aviation confirmed that the first retail customer took delivery on December 30, marking the aircraft’s official entry into service and closing out 2025 with a significant program milestone

Lannie O’Bannion, Textron Aviation’s Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing, emphasized “The first Citation Ascend delivery underscores Textron Aviation’s commitment to redefining the midsize segment with an aircraft that blends innovation, efficiency and unmatched comfort.”

Positioning in the Market

The midsize business jet segment is one of the most competitive in business aviation, and Textron’s strategy with the Ascend is pretty clear: evolve a trusted platform with modern technology and a premium cabin experience. The result is an aircraft that appeals to corporate flight departments, charter operators, fractional fleets and owner‑pilots seeking contemporary performance and comfort.

NetJets is expected to become one of the largest operators of the Ascend, with a 2023 $30bn agreement to buy up to 1,500 Citation jets over 15 years. The predecessor Citation Excel/XLS was a core component of the NetJets fleet, with over 100 of these aircraft in operation for many years. In recent years, the number of Excels in the NetJets fleet was reduced as the company increased its Phenom 300 and Citation Latitude fleet.
