How Old Is the Private Jet You Are Flying On?
Looking at data from market intelligence provider WINGX, shows that over 25% of private jet flights are flown by aircraft that are at least 21 years old. So, if you’re flying on a private jet, there’s a 1 in 4 chance that the plane is over this age.
Here’s a look at flights by aircraft age and how this varies by provider type.
The table below shows the number of global departures, by age band, in the first 6 months of 2026, compared with the same period in 2025, with data courtesy of WINGX. The data for the 12 months to June 2026, or just the month of June, show similar usage patterns.
| Aircraft Age Range | H1 2026 Departures ('000s) | vs H1 2025 | Global Share |
| 0 - 2 years | 149.4 | (3.5%) | 7.6% |
| 3 - 5 years | 257.9 | 20.8% | 13.2% |
| 6 - 10 years | 335.5 | (2.9%) | 17.2% |
| 11 - 15 years | 258.3 | 8.1% | 13.2% |
| 16 - 20 years | 318.5 | (3.5%) | 16.3% |
| 21+ years | 498.5 | 7.3% | 25.5% |
| Unknown age | 136.1 | 7.0% | |
| Total | 1954.2 | 4.0% | 100.0% |
For clarity, in the table above, WINGX has data on the age of most private jets, but about 7% of these aircraft have unknown ages.
Looking at the data in ten-year age bands, about 38% of flights were by aircraft aged 10 years or less, and about 30% were by aircraft aged 11 to 20 years.
A simple age number is one data point, but just as important are details on how well the plane is maintained and, for older aircraft, when it was last refurbished and upgraded. For instance, a plane may be 25 years old but may “look and feel” much newer if it had a major refurbishment and upgrade a few years ago.
Considerations For Charter and Jet Card Flyers
For flyers who use on-demand charter or jet cards for their travel, the age of aircraft brings up several topics to consider when talking to your charter provider. Some providers focus on newer aircraft, while others have a wide range of aircraft in their fleets.
Start with the basics: ask how old the aircraft is. Many operators or brokers will give you a fleet age range and can tell you the age of the oldest aircraft. Whether you are booking a one-off flight or using a jet card program, you can request newer aircraft or aircraft that have been recently refurbished.
If you get an amazingly low quote, ask whether it is because you will be in an older aircraft. The cabin may feel dated, tired, and worn in an older aircraft, and without a recent upgrade, the connectivity and wifi may be quite slow. A substantial interior renovation would include seats, carpeting, sidewalls, lighting, galley and entertainment systems.

Considerations For Fractional Owners
As a broad guideline, larger fractional aircraft operators have newer fleets, with an average age range of four to eight years. Over the last 6 years, these fleets have been one of the fastest-growing parts of private aviation, as the operators try to keep up with demand for fractional shares by adding many new aircraft.
Before buying a share from a fractional provider, ask about the average and range of aircraft ages in their fractional fleet. This is especially true in larger fleets, where you are unlikely to fly in your own aircraft, because with large floating fleets, an operator will bring the closest aircraft to you to fulfill your missions.
Another interesting question is how often the operator has to rely on third-party aircraft, for instance, on peak-demand days. And then ask what the standards are for those third-party operators, so are there limits on the age of the aircraft?
Considerations for Whole Aircraft Owners
If you own an aircraft, you have already decided on the key features and compromises to find the plane that suits your needs.
If you are looking into buying an aircraft, you’ll find you have a choice on buying a brand new one or something that’s, say, fifty-plus years old. SherpaReport members have access to a guidebook on buying an aircraft to help you through the thought process and steps on this acquisition journey.
The key aspect here is that aircraft age is only one part of the story. A 20-year-old jet that has been meticulously maintained and recently refurbished can offer a very different experience from a 10-year-old aircraft with an outdated cabin and heavy utilization. For passengers, the most revealing question may be: “How old is the aircraft, and what has been done to it since it was built?”
